Over Baoyang Zhao

He Dozed off by The Windowsill
Napping by the windowsill drifts into a layered space of liminality. The act of napping itself unfolds as a suspension between presence and absence. A state where the body is both here and elsewhere, both alert and surrendered. At the same time, the windowsill becomes a threshold—neither wholly inside nor outside, but a quiet edge where boundaries blur.
For me, this doubleness is inseparable from the condition of migration. As an immigrant, the body and its movements are constantly shaped, measured, and contained by bureaucratic systems that inscribe their authority onto space. In this context, to nap by the windowsill is not a gesture of idleness but of quiet defiance. An act of reclamation. Here, absence itself becomes a way of returning to one’s own body, one’s own rhythms, beyond imposed structures.
About Baoyang Zhao
Baoyang Zhao (b. China, 1992) is an artist based in the Netherlands. He graduated from the Fine Art department at HKU in 2023. Zhao has since exhibited at 37PK, Art Rotterdam, Josilda da Conceição Gallery, and other venues.
Baoyang primarily works with sculpture, which signifies the lingering traces of experience. For him, these residues are a continuous presence, folding and unfolding across time. The forms of his sculptures act as signifiers, shaped in a way similar to how words form poetry—blurred and extending beyond their signified. Once placed in space, Zhao’s sculptures move freely, dancing with the possibilities of expression.
Zhao is represented by Josilda da Conceição Gallery.
