Over Jun Zhang

From 17 January – 1 March 2026* in ACEC Ondergronds: Ontogenesis in the Liminal Heat of Remains by Jun Zhang. The art installation opened on Saturday 24 January at 16:00 hours.

Ontogenesis in the Liminal Heat of Remains

Ontogenesis in the Liminal Heat of Remains by Jun Zhang transforms ACEC Ondergronds into a mythological site for the emergence of nonhuman life. Drawing on lore of incarnations from various Asian folk cosmologies, the artist constructs speculative installations that intertwine organic matter with human-made materialsโ€”soil, engines, and sculpturesโ€”to imagine a liminal ecology in which latent life forms can embed themselves within machinism. Amid the remnants of the buildingโ€™s industrial history, energy transferโ€”once central to mechanical productionโ€”is reconceived as a generative force that parallels the process of breathing, shaping ways of life-making and sustaining cycles of destruction and rebirth.

In the cave-like basement, ACEC’s former underground boiler room, the video Cavern of Saline Genesis recounts folk traditions surrounding salt mines, particularly narratives of fertility. Fictions of ancient beings are collaged with stories from ACECโ€™s past, presenting a pseudohistory in which myth, matter, and architectural residues converge.

About Jun Zhang

Jun Zhang (1990) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher currently based in the Netherlands. Jun has participated in various artist-in-residency programs, festivals, and exhibitions. His work has previously been exhibited at Art Rotterdam, Het HEM, Maison Descartes, Larnaca Biennale, Limburg Biรซnnale, Re_Nature Festival and Springboard Art Fair, amongst others.

Jun has also finished a series of site-specific works in the public spaces of different cities, including Shanghai, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Jun describes his artistic practice as ‘Imaginal Energo-Cosmology’. This framework is grounded in cross-cultural anthropology, ecological philosophy and energy cosmology, tracing the entangled relations between human activity, nonhuman entities and preternatural forces. Through sculpture, film, and spatial installation, Jun explores how energy and perception co-generate new symbiotic structures and cosmological imaginaries at the threshold between matter and spirit.
